Built on Compassion: How Louisville High School is Growing Its Mental Health Community
March 23, 2026 — This month, our Chapter of the Month shines a light on how the Active Minds Louisville High School Chapter is creating a space where mental health conversations are real, open, and stigma-free. Since launching in 2023, the 80-member group has been all about supporting each other, speaking up, and making campus feel a little lighter. Louisville’s Chapter has quickly grown into a vibrant community of almost 100 members dedicated to advocating for student well-being. Rooted in the school’s mission of empowering young women to drive meaningful change, this student-led group is building a more compassionate campus through creative programming, peer support, and a shared commitment to making mental health a priority for all. From high-energy stress relievers to meaningful moments of reflection, Louisville’s Active Minds chapter keeps mental health support both engaging and accessible, finding small but impactful ways to help students manage stress and feel supported. Discover how they’re changing the game through our Q&A. Tell us about your school and chapter. Louisville High School is an all-girls College Prep Catholic high school founded in 1960. As part of Louisville’s mission of envisioning a world where women initiate change to enrich their communities, Active Minds/Mental Health Awareness Club has been a great addition to our campus climate. Our chapter was started with the main goal of advocating for the betterment of student’s mental health in our Louisville Community. Share something your chapter has done recently that you are proud of. We are proud of the range of activities and awareness we have provided to our school community. One of the more successful Wellness Wednesday events was when we hosted a “Just Dance” activity in partnership with the Counseling Department as a midweek mood boost to shake off some stress. We also implemented the “I wish Campaign” to our chapter and our student body so students could express their feelings to know their voice matters and to build a more compassionate community. Most recently, some of our chapter members hosted a booth at our school event “Louchella” as a fundraiser to donate back to Active Minds. At the fundraiser, we provided fidget coil rings and calming strips as a tool to support their mental health. Why is mental health important to your chapter and school? Mental health is important at our school, as stress can affect students differently, and we want to help students process their feelings in a healthy way. We want to create a sensitive and open environment for students to share their feelings without fear of judgement. How is your chapter making a difference on campus? Our chapter is making a difference on campus by providing students with initial breaks and methods to cope with stress by participating in the Wellness Wednesdays in collaboration with the Counseling Department. In addition to providing some tools, we spread mental health awareness to break the stigma by sharing quotes and educational videos. What advice would you give to someone thinking about joining or starting a chapter? Do it! Get involved and try to be routine in going to Chapter meetings. But don’t overwork yourself, your mental health matters just as much! What is a mental health mantra your chapter lives by? Aside from schoolwork and extracurriculars, students have other components of their lives that may be impacting their mental health, so lead with some grace. Acknowledging that mental health is important and how even though some mental illnesses are not seen, they matter just as much!

Hume R-VIII School Explores the Art of Connection
October 19, 2025 — We are excited to celebrate Hume R-VIII School as our October Chapter of the Month! This chapter turned a powerful vision into a beautiful reality, and we're highlighting their commitment to mental well-being. Their success is rooted in strong initiatives driven by students, from hosting a speaker on connection and anti-bullying strategies to leading the creation of a powerful community mural. What began as a vision to promote awareness through art manifested as a resounding success thanks to the power of community collaboration. Read the Q&A below to find out how this small chapter made such a big, colorful impact! Tell us about your school & chapter. We are a small Pre-K through 12 public school in rural Missouri. We launched our chapter last year, and our chapter emphasizes promoting positive mental health combined with art. Students in grades 6-12 are welcome to participate. We currently have 9 active members from last year, and we’re looking for more students to join this year! Why is mental health important to your chapter and school? Our students value mental health and checking in on one another. This year all of our staff completed Mental Health First Aid. We want our students and staff to have the support and resources they need to thrive. Life can be tough and it's okay to ask for help! Do you have a favorite chapter memory? Early last summer, our chapter finished a city mural on a wall at the community basketball court. Chapter members designed, developed, and painted the mural while involving the community. We also hosted a guest speaker on digital safety and cyberbullying for students, as well as a positive mindset. Our favorite chapter memory was coming together and painting the mural. Having the community support and seeing the reaction was incredible. We enjoyed working together to come up with the design and the process of the mural. What’s a mental health mantra or a short piece of advice your chapter lives by? Together we are better. We know the community and school are connected, along with local small businesses. The more we prioritize mental health, the more we enjoy life.

Athens State University is our Chapter of the Month
September 17, 2025 — We are thrilled to introduce our first Chapter of the Month for the new school year, Athens State University! This chapter’s unwavering commitment to mental health advocacy was recently celebrated with the Active Minds Chapter of the Year Award, a prestigious honor that recognizes the dedication they put into showing up for campus events, spreading awareness about mental health, and advocating for students. This small but mighty group has proven that passion can create real change, not only on their campus but also by partnering with the local community. Want to know more about this outstanding chapter? Read our Q&A with the Athens State University chapter to learn more about this dedicated chapter's work. Tell us about your school & chapter. The Athens State University Chapter of Active Minds may be small in numbers, but we make a big impact on campus and in our community. Our chapter goals are to increase students’ awareness of mental health issues, provide information and resources, encourage students to seek help as soon as it is needed, and serve as a liaison between students and the mental health community. We are open to all students and strive to create a supportive environment where everyone feels empowered to prioritize their mental well-being and support their peers. Why is mental health important to your chapter and school? Mental health is important to our chapter and school because it directly impacts student success, personal growth, and overall well-being. When students are mentally healthy, they are better able to manage stress, stay engaged in their studies, and contribute positively to campus life. Our chapter recognizes that mental health challenges, if left unaddressed, can create barriers to academic achievement, leadership development, and community involvement. By prioritizing mental health, we help create a supportive environment where students feel safe, valued, and encouraged to seek help when needed. This not only strengthens our chapter but also contributes to a healthier, more compassionate school community. What advice would you give to someone thinking about joining or starting a chapter? “Don’t be afraid and worried about what others might think, just take the first step and join. Starting or joining Athens State’s Active Minds chapter isn’t about perfection; it’s about passion and commitment to supporting others. Focus on building a community where self-care, empathy, and mental health awareness are prioritized. Even small efforts, like hosting a discussion or checking in with peers, can make a big difference. Remember, you are not in it alone; you can lean on members, campus resources, and the larger network for support.” Are you planning anything you're excited about? How is that going, and what have you learned? We are very excited about several upcoming initiatives this year. Active Minds is partnering with the Student Wellness and Accessibility Office and Disability Resources Network to promote our ‘Beat the Test’ webinar, designed to help students manage test anxiety, improve test-taking strategies, and develop effective study skills on September 25th. We’re also looking forward to our Fall Meet & Greet, which gives students a chance to connect, learn about mental health resources, and get involved with our chapter. Another highlight is our 2026 Mental Health Summit. Each year, we aim to bring something new to the event. This year, we will host a panel discussion on ‘All Things Mental Health,’ featuring the Honorable Judge Sybil Cleveland, who serves as a municipal court judge in Huntsville, as one of our guest panelists. Additionally, we’re excited about the variety of mental health topics offered in our breakout sessions, which will provide students with practical tools and strategies to support their well-being. Through these events, we’ve learned the importance of collaboration, planning ahead, and listening to students’ needs, which ensures our programming is both relevant and impactful. What’s a small action everyone can take today to support mental health on campus? A small action everyone can take today is simply checking in with a friend or classmate. Asking ‘How are you doing?’ and really listening can make a big difference. Showing empathy, offering support, or sharing mental health resources creates a culture of care and reminds others that they are not alone.
